This special issue brings together a group of articles related to aspects of disturbed language use and understanding. Relevant to persons in the practice of neuropsychology and rehabilitation psychology, the articles: *review and integrate a systematic program of research that examines core functional abilities that underlie the process of reading; *offer a replication of a previous work with persons with schizophrenia, which demonstrated a frequent superiority of monaural versus binaural language comprehension; *offer a thorough compilation of results from research on emotional processing; *introduce the role of the prosodic channel in communication and provide a description and classification scheme for the various prosodic disorders; and *examine the impact of variations in the prosodic and lexical channels of speech.
