In a misguided attempt to save his addicted mother from abuse, African-American Malcolm Xavier Jordan commits a crime that leads him into a boys' behavioral school far from his Cleveland home. After he is released and able to return to his neighborhood, he is arrested and convicted for crimes committed by a friend who turns on him. When we first meet him, Jordan is beginning to learn how to survive in a deeply flawed prison system.
