"Although various problems beset the development of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), weak agricultural development and underutilization of the female workforce are considerably detrimental. This paper highlights the basic facts regarding the agricultural sector in SSA and the way it relates to food security while examining the role of women in the agricultural sector. Concentrating upon the case of Senegal and the role of Senegalese women in the agricultural sector, this paper aims to demonstrate that microcredit programs can be used to help rural Senegalese women to become more involved in the agricultural sector, which will lead to increased economic and social development for their country. However, few impact studies have been conducted to test this hypothesis neither in Senegal nor in the rest of SSA. To begin remedying this fact, in the final section of the paper, I propose directions for further research that could be used equally in Senegal and the rest of the continent. In the index of the paper, advocates and researchers will find a user-friendly factsheet to assist them as they delve deeper into the subjects of female agriculturalists, food security and microcredit in SSA"--Abstract.
