Excerpt from The Law Magazine and Law Review, or Quarterly Journal of Jurisprudence, Vol. 5: May to August, 1858 Sir W. H. Maule was born on the 25th of April, 1788, at edmonton, in Middlesex, where his father was a medical practi tioner of good standing and consideration. His mother was a Rawson, of a family which we believe still flourishes in Leeds and its neighbourhood. The late Mr. Miller, member in several successive Parliaments for Newcastle-und er-lyme, and well known in his day to the collectors of bibliographical curiosities, as one of the keenest and most learned of their fraternity, was his first cousin by the mother's side. His paternal grandfather had been rector of Castle Ashby, near Northampton. A tradition, whether historical or mythical it may be difficult to decide, makes these English Maules an offshoot from the great Scottish family of Maule of Panmure. His earliest education was such as could be got in the neighbourhood.
