If the Lord had enjoined unity upon His followers, this would have been sufficient to make their duty clear; but He has done more than this: He has pointed 'out the reason for it, in the words that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me. The unity of the Church is the quality which is to give conviction to its evidence. This fact points to the function of the Church as an institution among men: to testify concerning 'christ. What is the evidence which this witness is to give? Certainly that which St. John declares to be the substance of the Gospel, that God has given us eternal life, and this life IS In His Son.
