The author has gathered together for this book twenty of so accounts of experiences from fifty years of travels and other observations. The result is a travel book in a sense, in its attempt to capture the atmospheres of destinations the reader may find of some interest. It is a book about people, too, usually in incidents of chance interaction. Overall, it is a personal memoir.
