Analytical continuation of gravity field in the downward direction has been of interest in geophysical exploration for some time. Only recent developments in the instrumentation and new theoretical approaches in solving the boundary-value problem have made this problem important in geodesy. For example, the results of airborne gravity measurements should be brought to the surface of the Earth or on sea level, a solution of Molodensky's problem requires downward continuation of gravity field from the Earth's surface to sea level. The emphasis in the study has been to find theoretical and practical solutions for the downward continuation problem in connection with airborne gravity measurements. (Author).
