This book is a testimonial to the lifework of Lily Vorperian, the master embroiderer of the Armenian Marash style of needlework. Over most of her life, and from the Middle East to California, she practiced her hobby of designing and stitching Marash needlework on small and big pieces of dark velveteen or on light color linen cloths, and produced hundreds of dazzling forms of multi-color Marash embroidery, a collection of selected photographs of which is displayed in this book/catalog. In recognition of her mastery of this traditional Armenian needlework art form, which might be a dying tradition now, Lily Vorperian received from the hand of the First Lady Hillary Clinton in 1994 the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship Award in the U.S. Senate Caucus Room on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
