And Possessions: Including and Discussing the Charters, Amendments, Rights, Privileges, and Franchises of Main Stem and Branches, by-Laws, Mortgages, Abstract of Title to Every Branch Acquired, Showing Width of Right of Way, Distance Built, Deeds or Leases To The Nashville, Chattanooga St. Louis Railway was origi nally chartered by the acts of the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, 1845-6, chapter 1, for the purpose of con structing a railroad from Nashville to Chattanooga, a distance of 151 miles. After its completion and in exemplification of the theory of the survival of the fittest, it has gradually spread out by absorption and expansion until now it comprises a system of miles of main track and miles of sidings, distributed as follows: In Tennessee, miles main track and miles of siding; in Alabama, miles main track and miles of siding; in Georgia, miles main track and miles of siding; in Kentucky, miles main track and miles of siding, making a grand total of miles of main and side tracks now being operated. It is a fact worthy of comment that of the miles of railroad in the state of Tennessee, Operated by forty-eight different companies, the mileage of the Nashville, Chattanooga St. Louis Railway more than doubles that of any other company and amounts to nearly one-third-of their combined mileage.
