The North Carolina 47th Infantry Regiment was organized in March, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. It served in the Department of North Carolina until May, 1863. During the conflict it was brigaded under Generals Pettigrew, Kirkland, and MacRae. The regiment spent the first year in and around North Carolina and Southern Virginia. In March of 1863 it participated in the unsuccessful attempt to recapture New Bern, N.C. The 47th moved to Virginia in May 1863 and fought with the Army of Northern Virginia beginning at Gettysburg. In June of 1863 it was assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia along with Brigadier General James J. Pettigrew, under Major General Henry Heth, of A.P. Hill's 3rd Corps. On July 1st, 1863 the Brigade under commander James Pettigrew was the first to engage the Union forces of General John Buford. The 47th was held in reserve during that first engagement, but later took part in Pickett's Charge under James Pettigrew. During the battle of Gettyburg it's losses were 21 killed and 140 wounded (35% of the 567 engaged.) General James Pettigrew was killed in the retreat from Gettysburg and the brigade was later assigned to Brigadier Generals Kirkland and MacRae. The 47th fought at Cold Harbor, then was involved in the long Petersburg siege south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. They reported 42 casualties at Bristoe and 20 at The Wilderness. It surrendered 5 officers and 72 men.
