"Heinrich Hertz's electrodynamic investigations, culminating in the demonstration of the finite velocity of propagation of electromagnetic wave radiation in 1887-88 were, like the discovery of the electron in the following decade, events of major significance in the history of science and technology. The importance of Hertz's achievement lay, in the first instance, in the verification of James Clerk Maxwell's electromagnetic wave theory. The ground for Hertz's investigations had however been prepared by the group of British and Irish physicists - the "Maxwellians" - who had explored Maxwell's theory and partially anticipated Hertz's discoveries.
