The language is currently spoken by more than 300,000 Garifunas, mainly, in Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and United States. On May 21st 2001, the UNESCO declared the Garifuna Culture a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity."
