Transfer of energy by thermal radiation plays a dominant role in controlling the rate of growth and spread of fire. Because most of the radiant emission from fires is normally due to the presence of soot particles in the flame, a detailed knowledge of soot formation is necessary if flame radiation is to be predicted, rather than obtained from empirical measurements in large turbulent fires. This need for a fundamental understanding of radiant emission and its relationship to soot formation requires the study of small laminar diffusion flames.
