Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Consumer Electronics Multi-national Corporations in China: Changing Trends and Spatial Implications Submitted by Yip, Chui Ping Lisa For the degree of Master of Arts (China Development Studies) At the University of Hong Kong In June 2005 Consumer Electronics industry in China has undergone extensive transformation since the economic reform in 1979. The participation of Multi-national Corporations in the industry has accelerated the industrial growth by bringing in capital, technology know-how, management skills and oversea network base. This research will demonstrate how Consumer Electronics MNCs have placed an uplift influence on economy, accelerating economic growth in a faster pace. Moreover, the contributions of MNC's are not exclusive to industrial growth, but also the regional development in providing job employment and heightening disposable income and hence raising living standards. The empirical findings in this research reveal that Consumer Electronics industry has been very sensitive to macro economic factors especially the political attributes in China. And, government policy promoting FDI and Consumer Electronics industry has been crucial to the industrial growth. On the micro economic level, cheap and skillful labour teamed up with a sophisticated network of supply chain in supplying parts and components have induced and maximized the MNC's operations, which sharpened their competitiveness among global competitors. In addition, domestic enterprises have become increasingly competitive, in terms of improved technology know-how and exercising more mature marketing approach. Therefore, MNCs could not only compete with price, but also continuously advance themselves in technology and other added values. In conclusion, in order for the Consumer Electronics MNCs to sustain, meeting customer expectation and fulfilling customer satisfaction are the keys to success. Due to the cyclical nature and short product life cycle, higher technical sophistication and innovative products are the definite directions to drive forward to. Secondly, Pearl River Delta has been strong in production and will still be sustainable in the future as the base to set up manufacturers or outsources whereas Yangtze River Delta will have to develop its strengths in the development of Information Technology and software infrastructure to reinforce itself in the industry.
