Becoming Blaze

For any child who has been bullied for any reason, and wanted to find the superhero within, this is for you. For any young black boy who has been bullied because of race, this is for you. My son Jonathan is the co-author of this book and the creator of his own story. He is the inspiration for the book’s hero, James. We created this story together to inspire children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and teachers. This project started when Jonathan would come home from school and talk about how a close friend of his was being bullied at school and other kids joined in just because they thought it was cool to do so. Jonathan wanted to stand up for his friend. It had been a struggle and we knew we weren’t the only ones who were going through this. Although there are lots of books about bullying out there, I thought that a book about a young boy being bullied because he is obedient and very respectful, especially a Black boy, would speak to kids no matter who they are. Also, the message that you can overcome bullies is powerful. Being heroic and brave are Jonathan’s superpowers and James’ superpowers in the book. Friendships breaking up and finding new friends who truly understand you are true-life events that all kids can relate to. Jonathan loves to have fun and is obsessed with video games and superheroes. His love for superheroes led to the creation of the superheroes of the Hero Squad in this book. Blaze, Little Flash, and Blitzfire are entirely new creations of the Hero Squad, as are the supervillains Dark Warrior, Madhatter, Shadow, Wildflame and Blade Rush of the Dark League. Being able to relate to the superhero from within is a major characteristic encounter that all kids should experience. For the kids: Jonathan and I want you to tap into your superpower and who you truly are because it is your true strength and will help you find your own Hero Squad. For the parents, grandparents, parent figures (including older siblings), and teachers: This book is a terrific one to read with kids and explore creative ways of dealing with bullies and finding new friends.
