A Preliminary Report On The Effects Of Juniper Harvesting At Prehistoric Archaeological Sites In Northeastern California

The Bureau of Land Management in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and other land managing agencies in northeastern California has proposed an extensive and continuing program of western juniper stand reduction. This reduction poses a number of significant impacts and potential long-term effects to archaeological sites--but until recently, these disturbances were poorly understood. This report documents the design, methods, and findings of a program of research into the impacts and effects of mechanized and hand treatment of western juniper on archaeological sites. An informal agreement between the California State Office of Historic Preservation (SHPO) and the USDI Bureau of Land Management (BLM) initiated this study.
